Recognized as one of the oldest and most well known dog breeds, the Poodle originated hundreds of years ago in Europe. While many people connect the Poodle with France (where it became a national symbol of France) the breed originated in Germany as a water retrieving dog. In fact, the name Poodle is derived from the German word “Pudel” meaning “to splash in water.” These shown dogs were bred for their intelligence, athleticism, and waterproof curly coats.
As the breed spread across Europe, French nobility fell in love with the Poodle’s elegance and charm, and the stylish grooming styles we recognize today started as practical trims for hunting dogs, short in certain areas for easier swimming, but left longer in others to protect vital joints and organs.
In 1887, three years after AKC was created they recognized the standards and the Miniatures as a separate breed. In 1931 when the Poodle Club of America was founded they recognized the Toy Poodle as the third variety of Poodles in 1943 and a member of the Toy Group. The Toy was first bred in the United States in the early 20th century
